How long have you been at Cleveland Elementary?This is my second year at Cleveland. Este es mi segundo año en Cleveland.
What do you love most about teaching?
I love children’s joy and laughter—and their raw emotions in general! One of my favorite activities to do with children is story dictation—they tell me their stories, and I write them down. It’s the beginning stage of literacy, when they are beginning to understand that written words have meaning that can entertain and move us. It’s an honor to empower children to tell their stories, and to teach them that they have stories worthy of telling.

Me encanta la alegría y la risa de niños—¡y sus emociones intensas en general! Una de mis actividades favoritas para hacer con los niños es el dictado de cuentos—ellos me cuentan sus historias, y las escribo. Es la etapa principal de la alfabetización, cuando ellos empiezan a comprender que las palabras escritas tienen un significado y que nos pueden entretener y conmover. Es un honor empoderar a los niños a contar sus historias, y enseñarles que tienen historias dignas de contar.
What is your favorite thing about Cleveland Elementary?
Our Cleveland families! I enjoy seeing family’s faces light up when I talk about their children. I feel honored to collaborate with families at such an important stage of children’s development and, as a preschool teacher, to serve as many families’ introduction to school. I also appreciate our dual-language program! It’s powerful for children to be able to grow academically in their home language.

¡Nuestras familias de Cleveland! Disfruto viendo cómo se iluminan sus caras cuando hablo sobre sus hijos. Para mí, es un honor colaborar con familias durante una etapa tan importante del desarollo de los niños y, como maestra preescolar, servir como la introducción a la escuela para tantas familias. ¡También aprecio nuestro programa bilingüe! Es poderoso que los niños puedan crecer académicamente en su idioma del hogar.
If you weren’t a teacher, what other profession would you enjoy?
I actually switched careers during the pandemic, so last year (during virtual learning) was my first-ever year teaching! Before, I worked in non-profit/higher education development and alumni relations. I would enjoy working as a private investigator.

Do you have any pets?
I grew up with dogs, but I currently care for only plants at home. In the classroom, we plan to get hermit crabs as class pets soon!

What is your most favorite place you have visited? Why? In college, I studied abroad in Toledo, Spain, which is a magical place. My host family would take me out to the countryside, where we picked pomegranates from trees along the road. They shared their love of Spanish poetry (like García Lorca and Machado) with me. It was a special time when I really improved my Spanish!
Durante universidad, estudié en Toledo, España, que es un lugar mágico. La familia con la que vivía me llevaba al campo, dónde recogíamos granadas de árboles a lo largo de la calle. Ellos compartieron conmigo su amor de la poesía española (como García Lorca y Machado). ¡Fue un tiempo especial en el que mejoré mucho mi español!
If you could have 1 superpower, what would it be?
To be fluent in every language. Ser fluida en todos los idiomas.
How many laps did you run in the last Red Bird Hustle? How many do you think you will run in the next one?
I was too busy cheering on my preschoolers to count how many laps I ran with them! Next year, I will run as many as my fabulous co-teacher Ms. Erin dares me to.
